Bone broth is a good source of collagen and other nutrients. Here is my best warming and nutritious bone broth recipe.
Ingredients
1 kg bone from beef, chicken or lamb
Water to cover the bones (approximately 3 l)
3 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar or 9 teaspoons lemon juice (freshly squeezed).
1 teaspoon of mineral salt (such as celtic salt) per liter of water
Any vegetables, herbs or spices for seasoning, such as celery, onion, carrots, ginger, fennel, bay leafs or turmeric (optional!)
- Place the bones in a pot and fill with water until all the bones are covered.
- Add apple cider vinegar, or lemon juice, and about a teaspoon of salt per liter of water.
- Season with herbs, vegetables or spices (This is optional, I normally don’t).
- Boil between 18-24 hours depending on which bones you use. Different lengths of time are needed for different types of bones. Make sure it simmers and doesn’t boil too hard.
- You can cook on the stove, in a slow cooker. I prefer slow cooker.
- When the broth is ready, use a strainer to separate the bones from the broth.
The broth will keep for about 5 days in the fridge in an air tight container. You can also freeze it for future use. When the broth has cooled down in the refrigerator, there should be a layer of fat that settles on top of the broth. I normally remove this but you can use it for frying or mix it into the broth, for additional fat.
Drink the broth as it is or cook it together with vegetables or root vegetables and make a good soup.
My best tip!
Gently warm up a cup of bone broth, first thing in the morning, and add a serving of collagen. I find this a very heart warming and gentle start of my day!
