Are you struggling with dry or dehydrated skin? Especially now when the weather gets a bit colder and drier.

It’s frustrating, right?

Well, let’s identify the root causes and find the perfect solution just for you!

First things first, what is the main cause of dry skin?

Well, external factors like cold temperatures, dry air, and harsh soaps may be causing your skin woes.

But did you know that nutritional deficiencies can also play a role?

Let me break it down for you and share some common symptoms and their solutions.

How to treat dry skin from the inside and out

Your skin is craving fatty acids, like omega-3 and GLA. Fatty acids are main component of all cell membranes, in the body, including the skin. Supplementing fatty acids as well as increasing fat intake from the diet, has been shown to increase skin hydration.

So, start incorporating more oily fish, flax seeds or fish oil and GLA supplements into your diet.

Trust me, your skin will thank you!

Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D could be affecting your skin’s barrier function. Vitamin D is important for regulating inflammation as well as for differentiation of new skin cells (when skin cells become skin cells and not any other type of cells).

Counteract this by getting enough sunlight or adding fatty animal foods and supplements to your diet, especially during winter.

Water

Hydration is key! Your skin is made up of 60% water, so make sure you’re drinking enough H2O. Personally, I stick to 2.4 liters a day, just like renowned expert Prof. Andrew Hubermann recommends.

Collagen and other proteins

Is your skin lacking collagen? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Consider adding collagen-rich foods to your meals or try a collagen supplement. Studies have shown that it can amp up your skin’s hydration levels.

I prefer powdered collagen as it is more price worthy than liquid collagen. Choose a collagen product that is pure and natural without sweeteners and additives. My best tips on how to choose and take collagen supplements here.

Protein in general is important for skin health to supply amino acids as building blocks for all proteins in the skin, for example keratin and elastin.

Sounds easy, right? By following these tips, you’ll be on your way to healthier, hydrated skin from the inside and out, in no time.
